Recently I've become increasingly interested in knowing where my food comes from and how it is grown. I'd love to eat organic all the time but sometimes its just not feasible and it can get a bit pricey as well. Nonetheless, I've been wanting to sign up for a food co-op to get farm fresh organic fruits and veggies delivered to my house.
A few months ago my hubby and I were in San Francisco attending a wine event and I went over to a food co-op booth and decided to sign up for a one time delivery of produce. I signed up with Farm Fresh To You, www.farmfreshtoyou.com. Basically its a delivery service designed to bring organic fruits and veggies directly to your doorstep. The produce comes from a local farm founded by Kathleen Barsotti and Martin Barnes, UC Davis grads (Go Aggies!).
I signed up for a small mixed fruit and veggie box for $25. I received my first delivery in November and have been hooked ever since! Currently, I get monthly deliveries of their produce that arrive on Friday mornings. The Friday deliveries are great because I can cook up a storm on the weekend and then plan our menu for the week.
The great thing about the co-op is it has given us the opportunity to try new fruits and veggies that we would otherwise not purchase on our own. For example, last month we received 3 beautiful red beets in our box. I had never cooked with beets before and decided to roast them in the oven with some olive oil, salt and pepper. It was heavenly!
If you are on the fence about signing up for a co-op I'd encourage you to go for it. Organic fruits and veggies delivered fresh to your door, what's there to think about? Oh and if you do sign up don't throw your box in your recycle bin just put it outside your door for your next delivery and they'll refill it with more yummy goodness!
